Job Description:
I am responsible for creating and implementing a total youth ministry program, which includes:

  • Jr. High Youth Group Meetings and Faith Formation (6th - 8th Grades)
  • High School Youth Group Meetings and Faith Formation
    • Social events
    • Service projects
  • Weekend Retreats
  • Youth Rallies, Special Events and other Encounters
  • Sacramental Preparation for Teens who are missing any Sacraments

What year you started working at SMG:
I have been a member of SMG since it began in the '60s. I worked here as Youth Minister from 1986 - 1990 and now am back, working part-time with the Jr. High and High School programs… again! (starting in July 2009).

What you like best about SMG:
SMG is home. I am fed by the community here; the staff, the youth, the families and the many friends. I love the Pre-school and Kindergarten, too! All four of my kids have gone through the pre-school and kindergarten. It is the BEST! Mostly, though, I am fed by the Holy Spirit, who is alive here.

Foundations

Foundations is a new family ministry at Saint Maria Goretti Parish serving people ages 25 - 55.  All are invited to take part in this exciting ministry.

The ministry is founded on four pillars (or foundations):

  • Spirituality - prayer groups, retreats, catechesis, Bible study and more.
  • Social - family, couples and adult related events.
  • Skills - classes, guest speakers, and events aimed at parenting and couples skills.
  • Service - support for existing service projects and the special needs of our parish and community.

Why is this ministry being formed?

This ministry is being formed for several reasons:

  • People have been asking for something more than just Sunday Mass.
  • To fill a void for support and fellowship.
  • To have a positive influence on our families, our Parish, and each other.

    WASHINGTON, D.C., JAN. 13, 2009 (Zenit.org). - Being the parent of an adolescent boy is legendary for its difficulty. But according to one priest who acts as a spiritual director and confessor for high school boys, just keeping in mind seven points can make for a better relationship with adolescent sons.
    Legionary of Christ Father Michael Sliney suggests the following seven necessities for parents of adolescent boys:
    1. Clear guidelines with reasonable consequences from a unified front; cutting slack but also holding boys accountable for their actions.
    2. Reasonable explanations for the criteria, guidelines and decisions made by parents.
    3. Avoiding hyper-analysis of boys' emotions and states of mind: avoiding "taking their temperature" too often.
    4. Unconditional love with an emphasis on character and effort more than outcome: Encourage boys to live up to their potential while having reasonable expectations. To love them regardless of whether they make it into Harvard or become a star quarterback.
    5. Authenticity, faith and fidelity should be reflected in parent's lifestyles.
    6. Qualities of a dad: Manliness, temperance, making significant time for family, putting aside work, and being a reliable source of guidance.
    7. Qualities of a mom: Emotional stability, selflessness, loving service and extreme patience.

Going Deeper

Have you ever wanted to go deeper in your faith? If so, this is your chance. This program is for people ages 9 - 120! Individuals, families, and couples are invited. Once a month, “Going Deeper” will meet in Piper Hall from 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm, for a short, pot-luck meal, praise and worship music, a themed talk by Fr. Doug and small group discussion. Then, every member will receive daily scriptures on which to reflect between meetings. Cost is $25, each additional family member is $5.00. Sign up TODAY!
